Starting the Year on the “Write” Foot – Guest Post by Mariëlle S. Smith

Today I’m excited to host author Mariëlle S. Smith as part of her blog tour for her author journal and planner, 52 WEEKS OF WRITING. Read on to get some good advice for goal setting and author planning as we move toward the start of 2022, along with info on how to enter her giveaway.

Tour Banner 52 Weeks of Writing

It may seem obvious, but I start every year filling in my own author journal and planner. Each volume of 52 Weeks of Writing is undated, so you can start whenever you want, but even before I published it, I was used to planning out the year ahead somewhere during December. That’s why I crack open a copy for personal use at the end of each year.

I’m not saying everyone should buy a copy of 52 Weeks of Writing, that that’s the best way to start your writing year on the right foot. I do want to talk about a planning habit of mine that made it into the journal/planner because I’d been doing it for years already, and with great success.

In 52 Weeks of Writing, during Week 1, I ask you to write down your long-term goals. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Five years? Three years? Two? Where do you see yourself in a year from now? In nine months? Six? Three?

Over the past two years, I’ve often been asked why I ask after long-term goals backwards. Wouldn’t it make more sense to start small and then expand? Well. No. Not in my experience. And that’s because I don’t just believe in setting goals. I believe in setting realistic goals.

I’m very much in favor of dreaming big dreams, but the more unrealistic your goals, the more you’re setting yourself up for failure. And consistent failure is not a great motivator. Consistently achieving your goals, that’s a great motivator. That’s what causes those dopamine hits that’ll keep you moving forwards.

So plan for success, that’s how you start your writing year on the right foot. Planning backwards is helpful here because it makes you ask over and over, “So iIf I want to be there in ten years, where do I need to be in five years’ time? If I want to be there in five years, where do I need to be in three years’ time? And if I want to have achieved that in the next three years, what does that mean for my two-year goals, my one-year goals, etc.?”

Backtracking like this gives you a great sense of whether you’re expecting too much, too little, or exactly the right amount of yourself. Perhaps you see yourself having published ten novels in ten years. As you figure out what your other goals have to be in order to achieve that big ten-year goal by then, you might realise there’s no way you can possibly pull that off, not while, let’s say, working fulltime and are thinking of having another baby.

Maybe you set out to have been published in ten literary magazines over the next ten years. But, as you spell out for yourself what that means for your five-year, three-year, and so on goals, you might come to the conclusion that you could be doing much more with the time you have for writing.

Of course, having ten novels published or having been published in ten literary magazines in the next ten years might be utterly realistic for you. We’re all different, we all want different things from our writing, and we all find ourselves in different circumstances. That’s why this exercise is so useful, because it will demonstrate quickly what can and cannot be realistically done within your specific situation.

As you do the exercise, don’t forget that goals aren’t set in stone. I use goals as guidelines, as something to keep me focused, but I revisit them at least annually to see if anything needs to go or needs to be added.

And whatever goals you set for yourself, don’t forget to celebrate each and every milestone. In 52 Weeks of Writing, I explicitly ask you to write down how you’re going to celebrate each of your goals as you achieve them, because it’s all too easy to ignore the small steps and just keep going. But we wouldn’t reach our big goals without those small steps, and they should be honoured as such.

WRITING PROMPT Each writing prompt is optional. If, for whatever reason, it does not speak to you, let it be. Who knows? It might make more sense to do the prompt later in the process. Most writers are introverts and dread the visibility that comes with success. This might not be you, but to some of us this fear is what stops us from finishing our work. Because what if people read it and want to talk to us about it? What if we're forced to leave the privacy of our desks and go out into the world, into the spotlight, with nowhere to hide? If this resonates with you, know you're not alone. Grab your journal or open a new document on your computer and set your timer to ten minutes. Now list all the good that could come with success. If this is a fear you recognise all too well, keep this list close once you've finished it.

Twisted Tea Christmas

by Laura Childs

GENRE: Cozy Mystery

BLURB

It’s the week before Christmas as tea maven Theodosia Browning and her tea sommelier, Drayton, cater a fancy Victorian Christmas party for Miss Drucilla Heyward, one of Charleston’s wealthy doyennes. But smack dab in the middle of the Fa-la-la’s, Miss Drucilla is murdered, her gold rings stolen off her fingers, and a genuine Renoir snatched off the wall.

The police come screaming in while Theodosia peers speculatively at the guests and wonders – whodunit? Urged on by Miss Drucilla’s personal assistant, Theodosia runs a shadow investigation on suspects that include wealthy neighbors, a handyman named Smokey, an unscrupulous art dealer, and the executive directors of two local charities who were in line for donations.

As Theodosia continually finds herself in hot water, she also hosts numerous holiday tea parties, stumbles upon a second dead body, and shelters a cadre of homeless dogs who come to her rescue in the surprise ending. This Tea Shop Mystery is written with pacing, plot twists, and action reminiscent of a thriller and is liberally sprinkled with the magic of Christmas.

“This is an absolute nightmare,” Drayton continued. “Miss Drucilla was so happy and carefree only a short while ago when she showed us her rings. Five gold rings is how she phrased it. You know, like from that song The Twelve Days of Christmas. But now . . . one can barely comprehend that some monster crept into her party and killed her! Made off with every one of her diamond rings.” He shook his head, unable to process such senseless cruelty and violence.

Theodosia, who’d been eyeing the wall directly behind Drayton, suddenly spoke up. “I’m afraid Miss Drucilla’s collection of rings isn’t the only thing that’s missing.” She lifted a hand and pointed to a conspicuous blank space. “So is the painting that was hanging right there.”

“What!” Drayton cried as he spun around. Others had overheard Theodosia’s words and were staring at the wall as well.

Detective Tidwell’s mouth worked furiously for a few moments as he digested this new revelation. He took a step forward and said, “A painting?” His eyes swept the gallery of paintings that were clustered like large, colorful postage stamps on the wall. He seemed to be confirming the fact that a blank space did indeed exist.

“I swear!” A man’s voice rose in stunned shock. “I think the painting that hung there . . . it was a Renoir!”

Downtown Dickens
November 24th

“Momma, are we there yet? Will Millie be there? Are we going to have Thanksgiving at their house?” Lila’s questions came in rapid-fire succession. “Will I get to sleep in the tent in her room like last time?”

Carole Kelley shifted in the front seat of her minivan and glanced in her rearview mirror. Her daughter was fighting sleep with the stubbornness of a seven-year-old diva.

Her four-year-old son Jake, on the other hand, was sound asleep in his car seat, not a care in the world.

“Yes, sweetie, we’re finally here. At least in Dickens proper. It’ll take a few more minutes before we reach Barrett House. As for where you’ll sleep, that will be up to Rick and Cassidy.”

“And Uncle William?”

“Yes, dear, him too.”

“Are we going to live at Barrett House? I want to ride the horses like last time.”

Carole released a long, weary sigh, then pulled in a much-needed breath. “No, dear, we won’t be living at Barrett House, as much as I’m sure you’d love to.”

“They have lotsa bedrooms,” Lila pointed out.

“Yes, they do. However, we don’t want to impose any longer than necessary. We have a nice apartment waiting for us in the same building where Cassidy and Millie used to live.”

“Is that where the lady lives who’s going to watch me and Jake when you’re at work?”

Gripping the steering wheel, Carole stretched her back and craned her neck, working out the kinks from the eight-hour drive, before responding. “Yes. Miss Frances comes highly recommended. Millie says she’s the bestest babysitter ever.”

“Are you excited about your new job? Will it be like the job you had back in Chester?”

“It’s not exactly the same as my last job, but I’m sure I’ll love it. Who wouldn’t love working in toy factory, even if it is in the office?”

“Will Jake and me get to see where the toys are made?”

Where was that blasted Sandman when you needed him?

“I suppose, but not right away. They’re way too busy to host tours, even for family.”

“Do you think Uncle William will give me another Princess doll for Christmas?”

“I guess it will depend on how good you’ve been this year.”

“I’ve been really good,” Lila insisted. “Really, really, good.”

“Yes, Lila dear, you have been very good, and very helpful with your little brother.”

Carole negotiated the last of the three turns in the road leading from town to the outskirts, finally pulling into the driveway at Barrett House.

Once she’d parked at the front door to unload her children and their overnight bags, she pushed the button to slide the rear door open only to find her daughter had finally fallen asleep. Just when she didn’t want her to be.

Let Me Talk to Y’all About Hand Foot & Mouth Disease (Part 2)

A few weeks ago, I talked about how Sugarpie came down with a nasty bout of hand foot and mouth disease right at the end of the summer.

It was not a fun time. After that first horrible night of no sleep, we were rather on the downswing. At least in terms of how Sugarpie would fair.

fingers-109158_640

The Triage Nurse Provides Reassurance and Guidance

The night before the triage nurse at the pediatrician’s office called to give a diagnosis based on the picture’s I’d sent in, I did a bit of my own research into what to expect. The nurse confirmed that the only thing we could really do at this point was try to keep Sugarpie comfortable.

This would involve dosing with ibuprofen and using moisturizer to help prevent itchiness as the blisters began to heal.

She also shared that once the blisters/rash appeared, that usually meant the child is far less contagious, if not past the point of passing on the virus at all, than in the days leading up to the fever and eruption of the rash.

I also asked about the risk to Babycakes. The nurse said that, with older kids, HFMD is usually a mild issue that may or may not present with any symptoms. She advised us to expect a possible fever and maybe one or two blisters, if anything.

Here Comes the Internet to the Rescue

With Sugarpie recovering from her sleepless night and on the mend, I was in search of the best ways to help her blisters heal with the least amount of itching. The last thing I wanted was for her to scratch and cause an infection or scarring. Fortunately since it was super warm, I didn’t have to worry about socks or shoes, and we were able to dress her comfortably in softer cotton clothes. She didn’t get to go on foot for walks, though she was pretty content to be pushed about in the stroller when we went out for air.

IMG_6896

I’d already learned the great things about colloidal oatmeal as it pertains to soothing eczema (which has always shown up during the cold winter months in little patches on Babycakes since she was tiny). I already had a little tub of Aveeno nighttime eczema balm, and we’d used some of their colloidal oatmeal bath packets in the past when Babycakes had mollescum contagiosum. A trip to Target replenished our stock of both, along with a bottle of Aveeno colloidal oatmeal body wash.

20210922_173019

I also turned to one of my Facebook mom-groups to see if anyone had any other suggestions. Multiple people suggested colloidal silver, which I’d never heard of. It comes in gel, sprays, and drops. People also apparently take the latter version as a dietary supplement as it can help boost the immune system.

I opted for the gel version, since reports said it stayed put better. It dries pretty fast, which was excellent for Sugarpie’s diaper area after her HFMD rash went crazy there. (BTW, that’s a commonly affected area in babies and toddlers.)

20210922_172856

I’m not sure if the lotion, body wash, bath packets, and colloidal silver did anything or if it was just the passage of time. But within a few days, Sugarpie’s rash lessened and the blisters began to heal.

The other thing I learned about is that, in babies and toddlers, a symptom of HFMD that is often unrealized or overlooked is that it can cause stomachaches and muscle pain. Headaches are common, as is a sore throat (usually due to sores in the mouth and throat) and loss of appetite. Luckily, Sugarpie didn’t have any issues eating or nursing. But I’d never heard of HFMD causing muscle pain, but that certainly would have explained why she had such a terrible night that Tuesday.

I, of course, felt even worse for how grumpy (to put it mildly) I’d been to her that night.

It Spreads

Sugarpie was soon on the mend, but HFMD wasn’t done with us yet.

About two days later, Babycakes crawled into bed with us and said she had a terrible headache. This is a kid who does NOT complain about headaches and downplays feeling crappy when she has a cold. So I knew something was up. Her temp was indeed high – over 101ºF. I dosed her with ibuprofen, and we spent the day pumping her with fluids and letting her rest. I made her take a nap that afternoon while Sugarpie was sleeping.

Well, I made her relax in her room with a book while I got her sister down for her nap. Then I made her lay down in the dark and cool for an hour. She fell asleep and I let her nap for almost two hours.

She was fine the next day, but I think that was her bout with it.

But then it was Mommy’s turn.

I felt absolutely awful the Saturday after Sugarpie’s Night from Hell. Headache, chills, general malaise. I knew what was coming. I even stayed home from church the next day (not that we were bringing Sugarpie, so we’d originally planned to go in shifts, anyway).

By Monday morning, I, too, had blisters popping out on my hands and feet. My feet, in fact, were on FIRE. I used the colloidal silver and also did a foot soak with epsom salts, which is another soothing option for older kids and adults (not recommended for babies and toddlers).

20210922_173101

But within a few more days, we were all on the mend and just had to deal with the aftermath.

Eseld finished her punch and looked away.

“I was being friendly with the viscount, on a purely decent level, on my part.”

“I’m worried about you. Men can take advantage. As in being purely mercenary.” Robert’s emotion rose to the surface, rawer than he wished. “I want you to be very cautious.”

“I’m aware of greedy men. And I’m not romantically involved, if that’s what concerns you.” She didn’t sound angry, more a question. A yearning?

“Are you collecting friends or inquiring where you should not?” He toned down his rhetoric, not wishing to upset her.

“That again. You think me foolish, or incapable.”

Her reply was soft despite what she stated. She didn’t deny her motives.

He moved closer. His heartbeat thudded; was she investigating a possible spy as he first surmised?

“You are one of the most capable women I know. Please, confide in me.”

They appeared to still dance around one another—this time with words.

She turned and faced him. “I don’t want us to be at odds.”

She paused for a moment and lightly touched his stock. “Is that all you seek, me to confide? Am I but a contrary girl who must be guided by you?”

“Truthfully, as we were always truthful in our youth, I want to kiss you.”

He cupped her upper arms and couldn’t believe he’d said that aloud. Her jasmine perfume invaded his senses.

“Pardon my boldness. I’m not of your station anymore, am I?”

“That doesn’t matter to me,” she whispered. “But aren’t you still in mourning?”

Let Me Talk to Y’all About Hand Foot & Mouth Disease (Part 1)

As a parent, one of the toughest things to deal with is illness in your child. It’s doubly hard when said child is too young to actually tell you what hurts or how they feel bad.

A few weeks ago, just as summer vacation was winding down at our house, we experienced the joy (or lack thereof) that is hand food and mouth disease (HFMD). We’re still not sure exactly where Sugarpie picked it up, though we have some suspicions.

(Here she is, on the beach at sunrise, because why would you let your parents sleep in while you’re all on vacation? At this point, she was feeling pretty awesome.)

IMG_6761

It was a rough couple of weeks for all of us. It turns out that HFMD is not only very contagious but also quite prevalent in the summer and fall. I’m honestly not sure how we avoided it up until now. But we did, even during those three-ish months when Babycakes went to daycare when I first went back to work.

There’s a lot to this story, so in the interest of being slightly less verbiose than I can be about these things, this is going to be a multi-parter. But hopefully by the end of the second installment, I’ll have given other parents some insight into how our experience went down, how we helped our little one get through it, and what the lingering – and somewhat surprising – aftereffects can look like.

The Night It All Started

The Monday after we got home from the beach, Sugarpie had a bit of a restless stretch in the middle of the night. Her temperature was a bit elevated, but I knew this only by touch and my instincts. Still, I got her back to sleep, and we went on with our lives. She seemed no worse for wear the next day.

Now, Sugarpie is not the greatest sleeper in the world, and never has been. (Hello, newborn colic.) But we knew something was going on when she just would not sleep at all the next night.

By Tuesday, we were almost back to the normal routine. You know, waking up at 6:30 instead of before-the-crack-of-dawn o’clock and getting to bed around 8pm. I’d gotten Sugarpie to sleep in our normal way (nursing, don’t judge me), but as soon as I moved to lay her in the crib, she woke up and went totally ballistic.

Like, screaming, arching her back, not letting ANYBODY hold her. She nursed on and off but would just not go to sleep. The hubs tried. My mother tried. My sister (who was visiting) would probably have tried if we begged.

She was awake for THREE HOURS.

Maybe more, I don’t know. But she did finally go to sleep and I was finally able to lay her down in the crib and go to bed myself.

But then she woke up screaming again after less than two hours. And was awake, once more, for like three hours. Maybe more. I’m not sure. All I know is that by 5am, I had not slept at all.

Side note: I am not the most sympathetic person in the middle of the night as it is. I like my sleep and I haven’t had enough solid nights of it in over two years. I am ashamed to admit that I am, thus, not a great parent in the middle of the night. I get irritated, impatient, and overwhelmed in ways that just do not manifest when the sun is up. It does not help that Sugarpie refuses to let her Most Awesomest Daddy even pick her up between sunset and sunrise, so in spite of his best efforts and desire to help, middle of the night parenting falls mostly on me.

Desperate, I brought Sugarpie into bed with us and let her nurse for an hour straight. She fell asleep, I may have dozed a bit. But as soon as I unlatched her to try and bring her back to her room, she woke up and it was all over.

She had totalled about three hours and forty-five minutes of sleep all night long. I had logged exactly zero hours of sleep.

I took her for a “rage walk” at 6:30 in the morning, angry and exhausted and praying she would fall asleep in the stroller for maybe just a half hour. I do not get up for exercise of any sort, so that just shows how desperate I had become.

Desperate Mama Wants Answers

Again, Sugarpie has never slept through the night, ever. We’ve had a nine hour stretch a couple times, but she always wakes up at least once a night. But that Tuesday night was HORRIBLE.

The Worst. Night. Of. Her. Entire. Life.

And that includes the stretch of six-ish weeks when she had colic as a newborn.

I knew something had to be wrong, because why would she not sleep? I mean, she wouldn’t even fall asleep NURSING, which is like . . . guaranteed. So I made an appointment with the pediatrician, but the earliest appointment I could get was the next day. I swore up and down that I needed to take her to urgent care, but outside of the total lack of sleep, nothing would really indicate any reason to bring her to the doctor at all. So I cancelled the appointment.

I was not the best at parenting that day. I think my mother may have sent me back to bed for a little while, as my sister was still visiting and was happy to entertain Babycakes while my mom took care of Sugarpie.

Diagnosis

Then the blisters started.

At first it was just a couple here and there on her hands, arms, and legs.

Not even her feet, really. She had a couple of bug bites from our trip to the beach that hadn’t really healed yet, so initially I thought the little bumps were just more bug bites. And then I noticed more little raised red bumps on her chin and cheeks.

But as I got a better look at them, I started to realize they looked more like the rash that shows up during a HFMD infection. I’d researched it a few years ago when there was an outbreak at Babycakes’s preschool, so I knew what to look for.

Wednesday afternoon, I sent some pics to the pediatrician. The triage nurse called me back the next morning.

Yes, it’s HFMD.

Never panic-shop.

Also, never drink and shop. And especially never panic, drink, and shop.

I’d done all of the above.

The tearoom’s oven broke last month while I was baking quiches. The estimate for its repair had been nearly as much as a new oven. In a fit of panick and piña coladas, I’d bought a new one.

The thought still made my insides curdle like over-whipped clotted cream. Industrial ovens ain’t cheap.

I hated budget pandemonium, especially when I was its cause. There was a certain joy in watching numbers fall into place, especially on the profit side of the ledger. And I’d just messed with my carefully balanced tearoom universe.

So I was more than a little anxious as I studied our tearoom. Miniature pumpkins lined its broad windows. Paper bats dangled from hanging lamps and sprouted from tiered tea trays.

Even the costumed Tarot readers had gotten into the Halloween groove. The scent of baking sugar and pumpkin hung in the air. Women chatted at their tables, teacups clinking.

It was October first, day one of the Halloween season, and San Borromeo (saint of heartburn) was becoming a Halloween town. This was a good thing for those of us dependent on tourism. Tourists don’t flock to the Pacific beach quite as often in October, despite the occasional day of spectacular weather. The Halloween festivities meant more customers.

Beanblossom’s Tea and Tarot needed those customers, especially after that new oven. It was a really awesome oven, though.

“You know what?” I follow him around the kitchen island with my breakfast and take a seat beside him. “Since you’re going to live here for the next few days, I guess it’s okay that you feel at home. So when you’re hungry, just come down and grab whatever you want.”

His black eyebrows knit in my direction. “Without asking?”

I bite the corner of one toast. “Mm-hmm.”

“Really? You mean everything?”

“Yes, I mean everything,” I assure him, laughing now while I chew. “Except my Oreos. If you want to live, don’t touch them.” This is a warning he should take very seriously. I’m addicted to the cookies.

As his gaze drops to my body and rises within a millisecond, I roll my eyes because I realize I ran right into that one. To his credit, he holds back his gamy smirk ninety percent. “Got it. Can eat everything. No Oreos.” Leaving his mug on the counter, he slides from the stool and gets the sugar bowl from where I pointed him. After he comes back, standing beside me now instead of taking a seat again, and adds a careful spoonful of sugar to his brew, he reaches over and snags the untouched second slice of toast from my plate.

My eyes widen in sharp protest. “Hey!”

“What? You said everything.” With a shower of mischief in his star-blue eyes, he arches his brows once as he takes a bite from the toast. Then he leans in really close, keeping our gazes locked with his intense stare, and adds in a drawl that makes shivers zoom down my body, “Be thankful that I didn’t eat the Milky Way.”

I’ve been a storyteller all my life, building bridges into different worlds. Already in kindergarten, I’ve seen the most fantastical things and wanted to share them with everyone. My teacher called me a liar back then. Today, I call it the first real flash of my spiritual gift and the cornerstone of my writing career.Author Photo

When I got older, I’ve had many visions of a perfect career, while writing has always been more of a hobby and kind of a therapy for me when the longing for more magic in this world once again caught up with me in a crushing way. When my first book was finished, I couldn’t even imagine sharing one of my stories with others, ever. In fact, I only got used to the idea while I wrote my second book and learned in a very miraculous way where the many stories in this world really come from.

It’s funny how, at that point, everyone told me I can’t possibly make a living with writing. They even warned me not to quit my job. But after my debut novella PLAY WITH ME came out and sales skyrocketed within the first week, I knew I could do anything I wanted if only I never stopped dreaming.

That’s also part of what I teach my students in writing and spiritual workshops today. Always dream big! If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.

Some personal stuff:

“I’m writing stories because I can’t breathe without.”

Disney is my attitude to life, and if I could I’d save the world from itself. My Patronus is a wolf, my wand the broken twig of an apple tree, 13 ¾ inches with a unicorn hair core. I can’t deny that on some days, I prefer my book characters over real people, but there’s not a single day going by where I wouldn’t try to find magic in reality. And when I’m alone, I love to listen to the many stories of the wind in a mystic mid-summer night.

So you see, I’m lucky enough to live in an enchanting world of my own. It’s peaceful there and full of magical things, fairies and wonders. You’re welcome to follow me there – if you’re ready to open up your mind and leave everything you learned about reality behind. But beware, if you dare to step through this door, you may never want to leave again…

“Open the door! By order of His Majesty the King!” The harsh shout from the street below wrenched Santiago out of his reverie.

The sounds of merriment abruptly ended within the house, and nervous whispers took their place. Santiago peered down from the balcony at the ten quadrilheiros  standing right outside the door. He’d never seen that many gathered in one place, since they typically stayed in Lisbon near the king. What could be so important for them to show up here?

“Santiago!”

The man turned to find his sister standing before him, a nervous Andreas at her side. Her entire body was trembling as though she would fall apart at a moment’s notice, and Santiago observed the way she gripped Andreas’s arm with such intensity that her knuckles had turned white.

“Are they going to arrest us? Why are the quadrilheiros here?” Lucia whimpered in a low voice, her breaths so shallow she could barely get the words out.

Santiago reached out and patted her shoulder. “Calm down, sister. We’ve done nothing wrong. I’m sure they just need information for something—”

The door creaked open below them, and Santiago motioned for Lucia to be silent.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Tomas Cabral, head servant for the Mendes family, demanded. Santiago smirked at the older gentleman’s steady voice; it was difficult for anyone to intimidate Tomas.

“Are Senhor and Senhorita Mendes in?”

Rather than answering, the man said, “Why have you come?”

The leading officer growled and said, “Senhor Mendes is to be taken into custody and his sister brought in for questioning.”

Lucia gasped. “What!”

“Shh!” Santiago insisted.

“You’re arresting Senhor Mendes? On what grounds?” Tomas didn’t sound nearly as confident anymore, but Santiago was proud of the man for not allowing the quadrilheiros into the house yet.

“Treason! Now, stand aside!”

My Fantasy Vacation (Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge)

WednesdayBloggingChallenge-copy

As we come to the start of the summer after more than a year of not being able to do, well, much of anything, I’ve noticed a lot of people discussing potential trips they plan to make in the near future. Many seem to be focusing on visiting family (that’s our big plan for the summer). But I know some people who itching to once again journey to far-flung locales.

Which makes today’s Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge from Long and Short Reviews rather timely.

My Fantasy Vacation

I’m kind of between far-flung vacations right now, as my kiddos are still so little. And I’ll admit that I’ve already taken a couple of fantasy vacations. Hubs and I went to Rome when we were still just dating (hence all the awesome on-location references I was able to make in WHEN IN ROME), and our honeymoon in St. Lucia was heavenly (though longer than the jaunt made by Marissa and Josh in THE ONE I’M WITH). And I’ll happily go to Disney World any time.

But I’ve always dreamed of taking a vacation someplace tropical, perhaps even by myself.

blue-2309309_1280

For this vacation, I would have pack so little that I could just take one carry-on bag on the plane. I would have a small resort cottage on the beach, with a fully stocked kitchen and lots of balcony or patio space. There would be direct beach access, and lots of amenities to enjoy, like a spa, a selection of movies to watch whenever I want, meals offered in a hospitality building if I wanted to partake, and, of course, plenty of time to nap, read, and write.

I don’t know if such a place exists or if I’ll ever be able to take such a vacation. But one can dream.

What’s your fantasy vacation?

Day 3: Professor Knows Best ~ 1957

Susan took a seat on a bench in the campus courtyard. “Come on, think,” she scolded herself. What could have caused this to happen? And, what happens if you don’t wake up back in your own time, and the familiar surroundings of the university or your own apartment?

“Hi there.”

Susan looked up to see a young woman standing in front of her. Dressed in a long pencil-straight plaid skirt, sweater set, bobby socks and saddle shoes, she personified the 1950s.

“Hello,” Susan answered back, something very familiar in the girl’s smile.

“Are you new this semester? I haven’t seen you around before.”

“Actually,” Susan told her honestly, “I’ve just recently arrived in, uh, Chicago.”

“Really, how exciting. I’ve never traveled anywhere, except to Joliet with my mom and Aunt Sissie.”

Not waiting for an invitation, the girl plunked herself down on the bench next to Susan. “My name’s Debbie.”

“Debbie?” Susan repeated. Old family photos came back to her in a rush.

The young woman nodded, her blonde curls bouncing around her cheeks. “Debbie Phillips. What’s yours?”

Susan’s breath caught in her throat, and it was a moment before she could answer. “Susan,” she said simply.

“I absolutely adore the name Susan.” Shifting her books in her lap, Debbie shared her thoughts, “If I ever get married and have a daughter, I’m going to name her Susan. Or Susie. You know, like that new song on the charts by those two brothers.”

“Wake Up Little Susie,” Susan supplied. “The Everly Brothers.”

“Yes, that’s the one. I absolutely adore that song.”

At that very moment, Susan realized two things. First, no matter how much she wanted to deny it, she’d fallen into a time warp. This wasn’t a dream, but a stranger reality than any she could have ever imagined.

And, second, she was sitting face-to-face with her own mother.

J. Lynn’s Review

The stories in this collection are lighthearted romances that are just the right length for people like me who, sadly, don’t have a lot of extra time these days to get invested in a full-length romance novel. Even though you don’t have a lot of time to get to know the characters, they are all well-written, fully developed people with believeable storylines (the time-travel tale is a bit far-fetched, only because of the “Back to the Future” vibe) and from the moment of the meet-cute, you’ll find yourself not only rooting for the hero and heroine, but wondering how each romance will play out to its Happy Ever After.

Each story takes you back to a different year in the second half of the 1950s, and Ms. Fraser did a great job not only telling five succinct, satisfying romance tales, but immersing the reader into the historical era without relying on info-dumps. I also liked that she ended each story with a page of interesting facts about life in America in each given year.

Be aware that the stories do get a touch steamy (admittedly a little steamier than I’d expected, especially given the length of each story). Fans of sweeter romances may not appreciate the intimate scenes, but they are brief enough that a hesitant reader could skim or skip those bits without losing the heart and soul of the story.

Four out of five stars from me!

My Favorite Indulgence (Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge)

The weather has turned unseasonably cold here in CLT, and having just snuggled Sugarpie down for a nap in her coziest sleepsack, I’m turning to this week’s Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge for inspiration.

WednesdayBloggingChallenge-copy

Since the inspiration for the fiction writing is a whole lotta:

bricks-1846939_640

This week, the challenge from Long and Short Reviews is to discuss:

Our Favorite Indulgences

This is actually a tough one. Do we mean food and drink? The thing we do that is most regenerative?

One of the fun things about writing the Sweet Somethings series was tying in each heroine’s favorite indulgence (the “sweet something” – see what I did there?).

In BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE, Carmella was, well, a chocoholic. All chocolate, all the time, with a particular fondness for Snickers bars. She used chocolate to cope with everything from a long day at work to the stresses of navigating her confusing feelings for longtime guy pal Ryan, while also surviving maid of honor duties at best gal pal Sadie’s elopement.

Chocolate candy

Kate from WHEN IN ROME fell hard for leading man Dominic but also a good scoop of ice cream. That is, until Dominic introduced her to the wonder that is gelato during their high-profile fashion shoot gig in the Eternal City.

ice cream

Marissa had plans to eat an entire cheesecake, all by herself, until the circumstances surrounding a thunderstorm forced her to share it with playboy-turned-good-guy Josh in THE ONE I’M WITH.

Cheesecake

The only heroine from the Sweet Somethings series that doesn’t technically have a favorite sweet indulgence is Tess, although her Top Secret red velvet cake recipe does feature prominantly. But she’s the one making a living from sweets, and it’s the love of culinary arts that brings Ty back into her life in HE TAKES THE CAKE.

red velvet

To be honest, all of the indulgences I featured in the Sweet Somethings series are favorites of mine.

Now, if we’re talking about indulgences in terms of things we do to recharge or spoil ourselves, then my go-to would be a massage. Like, from an actual masseuse, not just my husband (though those are nice, too).

massage

What about you? What’s your favorite indulgence?
